Symptoms Of Cerebral Palsy

Even though the accepted symptomatology is so very diverse, there are a number of symptoms that a child suffering from cerebral palsy may exhibit. Symptoms of cerebral palsy include delay of motor function skills as a baby. These include, but are not limited to, the reaching for toys, and being able to sit up by themselves, as well as being able to hold their own head up. Of course, by the time a child begins to try to walk, it becomes easier to diagnose.

Also even when a child exhibits the above symptoms, it is not always related to cerebral palsy, as many other disorders can cause those symptoms. However, those symptoms tied with abnormal muscle tone in different parts of the body, abnormal movements in general, the patient having abnormal reflexes, all help the doctor to look to cerebral palsy as a diagnosis.

It is very discouraging that often parents must wait to see if their young baby is going to show specific motor problems that become permanent prior to a diagnosis being made. Diagnosis is not always easily made, and of course, the child may not have the problems permanently, permanency being one of the hallmarks of cerebral palsy, thus the child may show diverse symptoms of cerebral palsy, but not have the disorder at all.

Even more difficult is finding the disorder from the symptoms of cerebral palsy when the child was involved in some accident that may or may not have affected the brain permanently. Case in point would be a child who fell into a pool, was rescued, but only after turning blue. Or a child who suffered a head trauma, for one reason or another, is another example.

Either of these children may have a number of symptoms of cerebral palsy after their unfortunate accident, yet 12 months later have none of the symptoms at all. A doctor who made a diagnosis of cerebral palsy brain damage will be proven wrong, but such a diagnosis was not entirely wrong, given the symptoms that the child presented with.

Later as the child grows, there are different symptoms of cerebral palsy that may be more evident. For example there are spasms in their bodies, there may be muscle coordination problems, balance problems, tremors, rigidity of musculature, epileptic seizures, mental retardation, speech problems, and such. As mentioned above symptomatology is so very diverse when speaking of cerebral palsy, that even doctors and nurses are often steered the wrong way by looking only at the symptoms of cerebral palsy, as sometimes they are the pointers to different diseases.

Doctors today emphatically stress the word permanent in using symptoms as an indicator of cerebral palsy, and truly that seems to be the only way to use symptoms properly when trying to diagnose cerebral palsy in a child. Unfortunately that turns diagnosis into a waiting games that most parents find thoroughly exasperating, but science has not found an absolute pointer to cerebral palsy for all young patients.
