Pro Bono Attorneys - Providing the Proverbial Free Lunch, For Free
By: Anee Durrell
For some people, there is no such thing as free lunch, especially under the economically and financially trying times in these days of major recession. The legal industry, however, offers something for the masses that need
legal assistance, and are lacking in the resources for it.
The solution is found in the
pro bono attorneys who provide free legal services to the financially or even physically disabled. And while this seems like a free lunch, the best is that it is lunch for both the party in need of legal assistance, as well as the
pro bono attorneys.
Mutual benefit
The key concept behind
pro bono attorneys and their free legal service is mutual benefit. On the part of the lawyer, this is seen in the practice and on-the-job training that is gained through actual experience in law practice.
While academic education and class room learning has its advantages, any lawyer can tell that
the real lawyer’s class room extends beyond the four walls of the university, and encompasses the actual court room where the law itself is practiced.
Where to use it?
Among the many areas where you can use a pro bono attorney, aside from financial reasons, is when you are attempting to establish a
non-profit organization. In these cases, one of the important legal aspects to settle is the filing of papers for your organization.
Ask for help through the National Council of Non-Profit Association. Civic sectors such as the women’s sector, youth sector, labor sector and others often have access to legalniches
offering free services. You may qualify in these niches, and can land yourself a good deal. A battered woman, for example, can turn to women’s organizations for a referral.
Ways to find them
If you are in need of pro bono attorneys, there are several ways to find them. The easiest is to find service listings on your state. These can be found either in the Yellow Pages or the World Wide Web.
You can also look for
the Lawyers Referral Services or the LRS, which will link you to various law firms and legal professionals in the field. The problem, however, is that not all law firms will declare their pro bono programs, and sometimes it is best to go through each of the law firms and inquire if there is available pro bono services for you.
Another option is to look for pro bono lawyers with a specialty in
the case you are involved in. some civic oriented pro bono lawyers, for instance, will provide free services to those who are victims of such matters as domestic violence, et cetera.
In the end, it is not only the free services which pro bono attorneys give that have made them popular. In general, most
offer excellent service, especially since each case can only add to the credibility and experience which these lawyers are seeking in the first place. As trying as the times may be, sometimes things really are as good as they seem.
